Evertaster by Adam Glendon Sidwell – Book Review

When eleven-year-old Guster Johnsonville rejects his mother’s casserole for the umpteenth time, she takes him into the city of New Orleans to find him something to eat. There, in a dark, abandoned corner of the city, they meet a dying pastry maker. In his last breath, he entrusts them with a secret: an ancient recipe that makes the most delicious taste the world will ever know — a taste that will change the fate of humanity forever.

Forced to flee by a cult of murderous chefs, the Johnsonvilles embark on a perilous journey to ancient ruins, faraway jungles, and forgotten caves. Along the way, they discover the truth: Guster is an Evertaster — a kid so picky that nothing but the legendary taste itself will save him from starvation. With the sinister chefs hot on Guster’s heels and the chefs’ reign of terror spreading, Guster and his family must find the legendary taste before it’s too late.

In My Opinion

This book originally appealed to me for a number of reasons.  First, I love to read and enjoy many genres including young adult fiction.  Second, I love good food.  I could actually be considered a bit of a food snob but I wear that label proudly.  There is something delightful about eating authentic, pure food. I have spent a better part of my years trying every new food out on the natural foods market.

Evertaster satisfied both of these loves. Sidwell has devised a fascinating journey where we follow along with Guster in his search for the perfect taste. The boy can taste every nuance of a food and how it was developed. Both a curse and a gift. There is enough fantasy and intrigue throughout the story to keep the reader guessing what will come next. Most importantly, what food could bring peace to the world?

Delving into the culinary world of those searching for pure food was a wonderful treat.  The lengths they would go to in order to taste the perfectly made dish from the purest, most unadulterated ingredients and the desire they bring to tasting fine cuisine is a real joy.

I could not put this book down once I got started.  You will enjoy the journey as well.
